Eight of my friends and I checked into the Days Inn in Shallotte, NC on Friday, Nov. 14, 2014. It was late when we arrived and did not get settled to lie down until 12:00. I looked over at my friend's bed and saw a bug crawling on it. She got it and threw it away. Before she could get back to bed, there was another one. We got suspicious and looked under our mattress. Bed bugs! We went downstairs and told the man at the desk. He placed us in another room. I thought he would have wanted to check it out for himself, but he didn't. When we got into our new room, we checked for bugs. No bugs, but there was a syringe with needle under the edge of my mattress. If the sheets had been changed, this would have been seen. I took it to the man at the desk, and he apologized. About 1:30 or 2:00 am, we decided to wake up our friends in the 3 other rooms to check for problems. We didn't find more bugs, but just nasty sheets. One said it looked like mouse droppings. You could see little droppings of something all in the fitted part of the sheet. There was also a mold-like substance on the head of a bed. Another room found a pair of men's underwear between mattress and head of bed. Again, if the sheets had been changed, this would have been found. One room had to be switched when checking in because when they entered the room, there was a beer bottle lying in the floor. These rooms had obviously not been cleaned. We decided to leave that place. We went downstairs to the same man at the desk and told him everything. He apologized, but didn't seem surprised. He said the two new housekeepers were not doing their job. We asked for a refund or to be placed in another motel since it was so late. He called the manager. We were told nothing could be done until the manager got there at 9:00. We checked out and had to drive to North Myrtle Beach to find a place to stay. I was told the manager would call me when she got in. At 10:30, after receiving no call, I called the Days Inn. I was told the manager was still not there. I was also told that the rooms there were "white glove inspected by the manager after being cleaned." I told her that those rooms had not been cleaned and were filthy. She said someone would call me later. A couple of hours later, the property manager called me. He said that he had heard about our complaints, but there had been complaints about the noise we were making during the night. He said that we should not have been waking others to tell them to check for bed bugs. I asked him if he had found them in his room, would he not want to go tell his friends to check. He told me no. Yes, we had to knock on their doors to get in. Yes, it creates noise when 9 people and an 18 month old have to get up, check their rooms, pack, and leave. This man was so rude to me. I had to ask him twice to let me talk. He said he would agree to refund my room with the bed bugs, but not the other rooms. He said he had no proof of the other things I mentioned above. When I told him that we had taken pictures and that I would be glad to send them to him, he sais, "I don't want to see your pictures." I told them that the health department would be notified and he told me that I was threatening him. I was just letting him know our plans to see this thru. He said ,"Bye," and hung up on me.
