My family and I were visiting Parris Island for our nephew's Marine Corps boot camp graduation. This hotel (Days Inn/Port Royal - RM 232) was the closest to the base and was recommended to us from another hotel that was booked solid. I viewed the photos and, even though it is a 'Days Inn' which is known to be a budget hotel, the combination of recommendation, photos and hotel description made us decide to give it a try. Having said that, this review is based on what we paid for the room. If this were the typical $29-$49 per night hotel/motel, the review would have been made with a different level of expectation - however - we paid $110 for this room and, as such, we expected a certain level of cleanliness and amenities. From room front to back; though a smoke-free room, it overlooked the pool and cigarette smoke from the patio below wafted up and came into the room whenever the door was opened. The windows were dirty, one of the two key cards did not work at all - the other had to be tried multiple times before it finally unlocked the door. Inside, the carpet appeared to have been recently changed. The two double beds looked as though they were hastily made. There were three pillows on each bed. The sheets/pillow cases appeared to be clean, but were obviously old. The air conditioning unit was missing the temperature control nob and the top of the unit had two dead flies and a bunch of smaller dead gnats. Clearly not cleaned or even wiped off. The door did not fully close. It closed, but had so much 'play' in it that there was about a 1/4 inch gap that remained open (we had to put a chair in front of it to keep it sealed). The wall switches were filthy and had paint on the edges. There was initially no microwave or fridge in the room (which was in the description - more on them later). The framing around the a/c unit had pieces of dirty bare wood that looks to have been jammed in to keep the unit steady. Turning on the a/c produced an immediate 'musty' smell. The walls had several areas that were damaged and/or had dirt streaks/chipped paint. The bathroom sink area (not actually in the bathroom) had a newer countertop - but inside the sink was cracked. The sink was not draining properly and took several minutes to drain fully. The bathtub drain was the same situation. The bathroom itself was tiny - I mean so tiny you had to slip in sideways when trying to close the door. The grout between the tiles was black (i.e. filthy) in areas. The tiles were cracked in multiple places. The water control knobs for the tub/shower were old, worn and were hard to adjust. The water was hot and plentiful. The shower head had signs of red mold, which is due to lack of cleaning. The towels were old and of cheap quality. They appeared to be clean. We checked the bed for bed-bugs and did not find anything . . . which is the only reason we decided to sleep there at all. We were only in the room a few minutes before having to head to the base, and we knew we would not be back until close to bedtime - so this was literally just a place to sleep and then get up and go again. When we returned back to the room, we were pleased to find a microwave and fridge. It was 9pm and so we decided to make some popcorn and watch something on TV. The tv was a flat screen (as was in the photos), however, it was a 'Insignia' brand and did not work very well at all. By that, for example, the people on the screen had sporadic purple skin tones, or the whole screen would turn yellowish from time to time. Old, junky, whatever - it did not work well to the point of not being enjoyable at all. The microwave also keep beeping at odd intervals and the timer did not work - no matter what you pushed, only '1' would come up - so you could set it for 1, 10, 1:00 or 11:00 minutes only. After using it, we had to unplug it to stop the beeping. It, along with the fridge, was plugged into a dirty power strip that was dangling from a wall outlet. Noise from the pool area was not bad at all - albeit the cigarette smoke coming from below was an issue. The pool itself was small and, while we were there, packed pretty tight with people. We chose not to enter the human soup. The complimentary breakfast included a pile of toaster made waffles, mini muffins and cereal. The 'fresh fruit' mentioned in their description was a couple of getting old bananas in a bowl. I could go on, but I think you get the drift. We were extremely disappointed with the room for the price we paid. If you are traveling to the area and specifically Parris Island - note that the proximity to the base is not an issue. It is the closest at about 7-10 minutes away, but the other hotels are probably about 12-15 minutes away. I would not stay at this Days Inn (and probably not any Days Inns) again unless it was literally the only option. We met folks that stayed at the nearby Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn. They seemed to have a much better experience. If you can swing it, spend the extra dollars - especially if you plan to spend any time at the hotel. I also thnk it bad business to gouge Marine Corp families . . . the same room is only $56 dollars today.
