The traveler is faced every day with taxation without representation ,a battle cry of American Colonists who railed against their government located in London. As a traveler, I find my hotel/ motel bill filled with local tax assessments for which I will receive no benefit. Local and State governments have found that the traveler is easy to tax since as a transient he or she will be gone shortly and likely not to complain at the next session of the State Legislature or City/ County governments.

I have found both a room tax and a bed tax on my bill in a community in Illinois, A convention tax for Sweet sixteen parties for a so called convention facility in New Mexico, An education tax in Aiken S.C. for public education , as well as a so called State access tax, a local so called access tax, A local sales tax and a so called local option Sis tax. I have no idea what most of these taxes address.

The latest outrage by the State of Georgia Legislature was to place a $5.00 tax per day on every hotel/motel charge in Georgia to address traffic issues primarily in Atlanta .Clearly , governments have discovered that the traveler can be taxed ad finitum with no recourse of the traveler.

I respectfully suggest AAA get back to it's roots of protecting it's members from schemes , scams and trickery while traveling far from home and get involved with stopping the egregious items being assessed them as taxes because of being strangers. I suggest monitoring State legislatures and local governments and lobbying against these taxing practices obviously levied against those having no recourse at the ballot box.

A 14 year member
