On the Friday before Labor Day, AAA stole our vehicle from a local Massachusetts parking lot. The theft was reported to the local police who promptly filed a police report for a stolen vehicle. AAA broke into the vehicle, damaging the driver's side door and overroad the vehicle anti-theft device on the console by popping a hole in the consloe so they could manually shift the vehicle into neutral without keys. Motor vehicle theft is defined as a criminal act of stealing or attempting to steal a car, or any other motor vehicle. The definition goes further to explain that the theft of an unattended vehicle without keys is the removal of a parked vehicle either by breaking and entry, followed by hotwiring, or other tampering methods to start the vehicle, OR ELSE TOWING. Our vehicle was gone for almost 4 days on a holiday weekend, causing us to cancel pre-arranged plans and causing great inconvenience for the following reasons:

1. The vehicle contained personal information including names, address, phone #s, a cell phone, keys to our house and other personal identifying information.
2. Therefore, we had to cancel all of our credit and debit cards and contact all banks that we normally deal with.
3. We had to have all the locks on our house changed due to fear of unauthorized entry and theft.
4. We had to remain at home all weekend, canceling all weekend plans and activities, in fear that our house would be broken into.
5. We had difficulty sleeping and feeling comfortable at home since we had to be on alert for break-ins all weekend.
5 We reported the car stolen to our insurance company, who then initiated their process for dealing with stolen vehicles, including multiple phone calls made to us.
6. Once the vehicle was located and returned, we had to have repairs done and spend approximately 5 hours of valuable work time at the auto repair shop.
7. Many hours were consumed over the weekend dealing with all the above problems, so our weekend was completely ruined and plans canceled.
8. We spent hours on the phone dealing with rude, unsympathetic AAA customer service employees, going up the chain of command from multiple customer service representatives, to supervisors, to a manager and to the Director of Customer Service, John Martin.
9. This experience produced a lot of stress and anxiety. When this was relayed to the AAA staff, they dismssed it with ease.

We received a call from the local police department on Sunday night at 10:15 p.m. informing us that our vehicle was in New Hampshire at an auto repair shop. They informed us that AAA had stolen the vehicle by taking the wrong vehicle and had not verified that our vehicle DID NOT belong to another AAA member that had requested a tow, before breaking into our vehicle and taking it to NH. Please note that our vehicle has MA license plates, and the one AAA was supposed to tow had NH plates, even though AAA had told us the vehicle they were supposed to tow had MA plates. Total incompetence!!!! AAA towed our vehicle back to our residence on Labor Day. So we did not have use of this vehicle for close to 4 days.

AAA denies the vehicle was stolen, despite what they did exactly fits the definition of a stolen vehicle / grand theft auto, and the police reported it as stolen. AAA calls this an unattended tow, which they claim to do on occassions. I tried to have AAA perform an unattended tow yesterday, called a AAA office, and I was told they do not do unattended tows as it is against their policies. We have talked to insurance adjusters, insurance claims personnel, two owners of towing companies, the local police, the state police, and or auto mechanic. Most of the individuals we talked to had 20+ years in the business or profession. Not one person can believe this story or has ever heard of such a thing!!! NOT 1!!!! Also, when I called AAA to report what had happened, the AAA rep. that answered said they had never heard of this before and it was very bizarre. In trying to get some kind of acknowledgement and compensation for this inappropriate theft of and damage to our property, and the huge inconveniences caused, AAA offered to pay for the damage to our vehicle and give us a $100 credit toward our membership!!!!!! That's all folks!!! We have been AAA customers for over 25 years, they screwed up our lives on a holiday weekend, created a great deal of stress and cancellation of plans, put us at risk in a number of ways, and all they can come up with is $100!!!!! What a great organization focused on customer service!!! Besides that, their customer service people are rude, unsympathetic and arrogant. I will be posting a summary of this case with state, local and national news outlets, and it just happens that my son interned for the Judge Judy show last summer and they may love this one!! See you in court AAA!!!!
