I met the most amazing customer service clerk by the name of David Holmes, at Pier 1, Store 508, in Manhattan Beach, Ca. I went to the store to check on a vase I had seen over the weekend. I inquired about the vase with the clerk at the front of the store and she informed me that she had sold it. When I asked if there was another one, she just matter-of-fact said it was the only one - I said "the only one", and she responded "Yes, and that Pier 1 does that when they are trying out a new product". She directed me to the back of the store to check on other vases. On my way to the back, David inquired if I had been helped - I told him that I was looking for a particular vase and was told that it had been sold and was the only one. His response was (with a big welcoming smile) "You mean they didn't tell you that we would make one for you". He said that he was on his way out, but still took time to listen and suggested that I return the following day when he would be there. What was striking and different about David was that as he was walking out I observed how he greeted other customers as they walked in, while the other clerks on the floor were just going about their business. I did return the following day, and there was that big smile and friendly greeting - he again wanted to know what was I looking for, had me follow him while he went online, when that didn't work, he walked me over to the back of the store and showed me other vases. I asked to see the manager, I shared my experience and told him that David is the type of employee I would want if it were my store - he represents what true "customer service" is and we need more of him.
