Nine months prior to my daughter's graduation from college at Humboldt State in California, I was looking for accommodations. Unfamiliar with the area, I booked the Comfort Inn at Fortuna. An hour after booking and receiving confirmation letter, my daughter told me it was too far away, whereupon I immediately called cancelled the reservation verbally. I received assurance my reservation had "definitely" been cancelled, and then I received a secondary correspondence. It too said "confirmation"- (which I presumed meant it had confirmed the cancellation, as there had been no other reason for the secondary correspondence other than the prompting of my request for cancellation.) I thought nothing of it, until 9 months later, when I received a $150 charge on my Visa from Comfort Inn Fortuna. I immediately called, to have the hotel correct the inaccurate charge. The very kind manager took the matter to the owner, who refused to rectify their error. Between the time I had first booked/cancelled and their charging me, was no longer than an hour. Between Sept 2012 and May 2013, when I was charged, no attempt to confirm reservation was ever made. (The Best Western in Eureka where I wound up staying took the time to call and confirm, especially recognizing it was a very busy graduation weekend filled with parents, and the reservation was made 9 months prior. Comfort Inn at Fortuna apparently prefers to erroneously charge for previously cancelled reservations, creating ill will, and giving Comfort Inn's in general a bad name. I am appalled, at how this was handled on hotel's part. I cannot comment on facilities, only the horrific ownership management. The man who handled the phones, was quite conciliatory. I appreciated his professionalism, and attempt to resolve the situation. As it was owner's decision, it was out of his hands. I am not one prone to complaints, but this was a particularly egregious situation. This Comfort Inn in Fortuna, is a poor company representation, and frankly, Comfort Inn Corporate would greatly benefit from removing them from the national chain. I would be afraid to book again, lest I cancel, and still get charged. As far as I am concerned, the owner at Comfort Inn Fortuna is nothing short of a thief, unscrupulously stealing good people's money. My advise, don't make a reservation in the first place, because if you need to cancel, and it is not properly handled on their end in the beginning, you will be on the hook for it.
