A rental from SFO 10/3/14-10/5/14

One couple was in front of us and we waited over 20 minutes before our reservation was serviced. We were offered the prepaid full tank option which was not effective for us given the limited amount of driving we were going to be doing over the next day and a half. I was not informed of the per gallon rate charged if one returned the tank less than full. More on that later. Upon returning the car two days later, the associate documented the fuel gauge as showing 2/8 tank (that would be a quarter of tank to anyone with the most rudimentary knowledge of fractions and lowest common denominators). In fact the car was returned with just a hair under 1/2 tank--much closer to 1/2 tank than 3/8 tank. The documented mileage on the car was 299 miles and the fuel economy of the vehicle (2013 Kia Optima) ranges from 24 to 35 mpg. All but maybe 20 miles were on the 101 freeway in traffic free conditions. According to their calculations we would have had fuel economy of 21.6 mpg (worse than their lowest range of 22 mpg) using their observation, and 32.4 mpg according to ours. In fact that was at exactly 1/2 tank which makes my claim even stronger. Despite this easy-to-point-out scientific methodology, Donna in corporate offices insists on using the recorded mileage of the agent who was busy cutting up in Spanish with her associate while we were frantically trying to catch a plane. I've rented a lot of cars over the years and NEVER had an experience as poor as this one. I would walk before renting from these fools again. Lastly, they charged a whopping $9.89/gallon to refuel half the tank while billing us for refueling 3/4 tank. Based on the fuel capacity of that vehicle (18.5 gallons), we were robbed to the tune of $45.74 + taxes on the fuel.
