December 22, 2012 (Original event)

Here is a "AAA" horror story. We were towing our 32-foot fifth wheel trailer towards Felton, Ca, from the Bay Area. We were almost at the summit of Route 17, climbing a very steep grade, when our truck severely overheated in a matter of minutes. We pulled off at the last spot available and prayed the truck wouldn't catch fire. After waiting an hour or so for the engine to cool down a little, I checked the oil and I was about 3-4 quarts down - almost empty. The cause (discovered later) was a stuck thermostat in the truck engine.

We called AAA, our road insurance and liability insurance company for at least 45 years, and asked for help, specifically 5-6 quarts of oil. AAA refused: "We don't do oil!". I was incredulous. They do gas and water and air in the tires, but for reasons we still don't understand, no oil. They offered to send two tow trucks, one for the pickup and one for the trailer, after I unhitched - literally an impossibility with the truck incapacitated and perched on the side of a mountain. Ultimately they hung up on me, leaving my wife and me stranded. They did NOT ask us if we were safe - we were NOT. The insurance company with which we had liability on the trailer, headquartered in Phoenix, was kind enough to send out a repair truck with oil. The driver followed us up and over the summit after the oil was in, to be sure we were OK.

I cannot tell you how helpless we felt when they refused us assistance and hung up. They weren't just late - they refused to respond at all!

September 8, 2014 (Followup)

This year in January we declined to renew our AAA Road Service due to the the previous event, after much contemplation. I received my AAA liability/comprehensive vehicle insurance renewal documents in the mail, due this month; I currently have an active insurance policy. I went on the website to pay my renewal and received the following message:

"Our records indicate you no longer have an active AAA account. Please try again, join AAA again , or call us at

I called AAA customer service. When given my insurance policy number, the rep found that all my data was available in their system. He said I might not be able to renew, as I was no longer a member (i.e. no longer had road service), but ultimately the system took my payment and delivered a confirmation number. But I will no longer have the website available to me - payments will have to be made over the telephone - because I do not have road service. I intend to pursue this serious lack of customer care through AAA Corporate.
